christmas-highland-cow-paint-by-numbers
Christmas Highland Cow Paint by Numbers Kit

Our Highland cow, dressed for Christmas. The same shaggy ginger fringe and wide cream horns, now with a holly wreath and a big red bow around the neck. It is a cheerful, slightly silly festive portrait that suits a kitchen or hallway, and anyone who already loves Highland cows will know straight away that it was chosen for them.

Why it works for beginners

The coat is painted as big, flowing locks of ginger, rust and cream, so each section is a generous size and easy to fill. The background is one soft sweep of sage green fading to cream with nothing in it to trip you up. The wreath is a handful of large holly leaves and a few red berries, and the bow is two bold shapes of red. The nose and the horns are smooth, simple areas that feel like a rest after the fur.

Time and colours

At 40x50cm, expect eight to twelve hours, usually three or four evenings. 24 colours keeps it firmly beginner level. 36 colours adds a few more shades of ginger and makes the coat look shaggier, if you have painted a kit before.

Picking a size

An upright portrait, with the cow filling the canvas. 30x40cm or 40x50cm is the comfortable choice for a first kit. At 50x60cm it makes a bold, fun piece for a big wall.

Painting the cow well

Paint each lock of fur in strokes that follow the way the hair falls, instead of flooding the shape flat, and the coat starts to look like hair. Do the background first and the berries last. If you want the year-round version, our original Highland Cow Portrait is the same subject without the festive extras. More seasonal designs are in our Christmas collection, and our Christmas order-by dates show when to order for a gift.

What you get, delivery and returns

The kit comes with a pre-printed numbered canvas, numbered acrylic paint pots matched to your colour count, three brushes (fine, medium and broad), a full-colour reference print and a getting started guide, all packed in a gift box.

Sizes: 20x30, 30x40, 40x50, 50x60 or 60x70cm.
