christmas-village-paint-by-numbers
Christmas Village at Dusk Paint by Numbers Kit

A village street at dusk, deep in snow, with every window lit amber, garlands over the doorways and a Christmas tree glowing beside the square. A church spire rises in the distance, the sky has gone to indigo with a last band of pink on the horizon, and the light from the houses and lamps spills gold across the snowy cobbles. It is the scene people mean when they say a Christmas card picture, and it is one you paint once and bring out every December.

The light is the whole job

The painting works because of the contrast between cold and warm. The snow, roofs and sky are built from blues, lilacs and greys, and set against them are hundreds of small amber and gold sections in the windows, lanterns, tree lights and the reflections on the street. Detail runs right across the canvas, from the garlands on the nearest houses to the rooftops in the distance, so this one is for painters who have a few kits behind them and like a long project. Get the warm sections clean and the village really does look lit from inside.

Time and colours

This is an advanced kit. At 40x50cm, plan on 30 to 40 hours, which is several weeks of evenings, so it suits someone who wants a project to see them through the winter. With 36 or 48 colours the dusk sky becomes a proper gradient and the window glow gets a softer edge, and we would steer you to 48 if you want the finished piece on the wall every Christmas. If you are newer to painting, the Christmas Market gives you the same warm glow with far fewer sections.

Picking a size

The scene is wide and packed with detail, so it needs some size to breathe. 40x50cm is the smallest we would suggest, because below that the window and garland sections get very small. At 50x60cm or 60x70cm it makes a real centrepiece above a fireplace or sofa.

Painting the village well

Work from the sky down and from the back of the street to the front, so nearer buildings overlap dry paint behind them. Paint the dark blues before the ambers next to them, because a light colour covers a dark edge more cleanly than the other way round. Other festive designs are in our Christmas collection, more scenes like this are in the landscapes collection, and our Christmas order-by dates show when to order for a gift.

What you get, delivery and returns

The kit comes with a pre-printed numbered canvas, numbered acrylic paint pots matched to your colour count, three brushes (fine, medium and broad), a full-colour reference print and a getting started guide, all packed in a gift box.

Sizes: 20x30, 30x40, 40x50, 50x60 or 60x70cm.
