poinsettia-paint-by-numbers
Christmas Poinsettia Paint by Numbers Kit

A red poinsettia in a plain cream pot, its big pointed leaves opening out like a star against a warm gold background. It is the Christmas flower, and it brings the same bright red into a room as the real thing, except this one will not drop its leaves by New Year.

Why it works for beginners

Each red bract is one large shape split into a few shades, darker at the base and lighter towards the tip, so filling them feels quick and satisfying. The dark green leaves are just as broad, the pot is a simple cream curve, and the background is one soft sweep of gold. The little yellow-green buds in the centre are the only small sections.

Time and colours

At 40x50cm most people finish in five to eight hours. 24 colours is plenty. 36 colours gives the red bracts a softer shift from crimson to scarlet, which is worth it if the finished piece will go on show every December.

Picking a size

An upright design with the plant filling the canvas. It works well small, so 30x40cm is a nice size for a shelf or a gift, and 40x50cm looks lovely over a sideboard.

Painting the poinsettia well

Fill the background first, then work round the bracts one at a time from the darkest red to the lightest, and finish with the pot and the centre.
