snowy-christmas-cottage-paint-by-numbers
Snowy Christmas Cottage Paint by Numbers Kit

A thatched stone cottage sits deep in fresh snow on Christmas Eve, a wreath on the front door, lamplight in the small square windows and smoke rising from the chimney. A path leads up through a little wooden gate to the door, past a fir tree strung with lights. The sky behind has turned soft lavender and rose. If you have ever wanted to walk into a Christmas card, it would be this one.

What makes it satisfying

Snow on a thatched roof is the most enjoyable part. It sits in thick, rounded shapes with blue shadows underneath and warm pink where the evening light hits, and each of those is its own section, so you watch the roof gain weight as you go. Around it, though, the detail runs right across the canvas: every stone in the walls, the berry bushes along the path, the window panes and the snow on the gate are their own small sections. The sky and the big roof give you somewhere calm to rest between them, but this is a long, careful project, which is why we class it as advanced.

Time and colours

Advanced. Most people take 28 to 36 hours at 40x50cm, so start early if you want it finished for Christmas. We would choose 36 or 48 colours, which bring out the difference between the blue-white of the snow in shadow and the warm white where the window light falls on it, and that difference is what makes the scene feel cosy.

Picking a size

This is a landscape-format painting with the cottage in the centre. We would not go below 40x50cm, because the stones and garden sections get very small. At 50x60cm it is a lovely winter centrepiece.

Painting the cottage well

Start with the sky, then the roof snow, then the walls and windows, and finish with the garden and path. Paint the window glow before the dark frames around it.
