Getting Started

Each Paint A Moment kit comes with a pre-printed canvas (the design is faintly numbered on it), a full set of numbered acrylic paints, three brushes (fine, medium and broad), and printed instructions. Most kits also include a reference poster of the finished painting and a small hanging set.

Yes. Paint by numbers is built for beginners. You match the numbered area on the canvas to the numbered paint pot — that's it. Every kit is graded Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced. If you've never picked up a brush, start with a Beginner kit and work your way up.

Stick with a Beginner kit on your first go. Beginner kits use 24 colours and have larger areas to fill. Intermediate steps up to 36 colours, and Advanced goes to 48 with much finer detail. Our difficulty guide has the full breakdown.

It depends on size and difficulty. A Beginner 30×40cm kit takes most painters 5–10 hours. Intermediate kits run 10–20 hours. Advanced kits can take 25+ hours. Most people paint across a week or two of evenings — there's no rush.

Just a couple of small jars of water for cleaning brushes, paper towel, and a flat surface. Good light helps. Everything else you need is in the box.

Acrylic paint is forgiving. Wait for the wrong colour to dry, then paint over it with the correct number. The canvas can take many layers without losing detail.

Painting Tips

Most painters work one colour at a time — fill in every area marked '1', then every area marked '2', and so on. This is faster and uses less paint. Some prefer to work top-to-bottom, or by section. Both work.

Either approach works, but darks-first is the most common. Painting darks first gives you a clear contrast map for the rest of the painting. Lights last lets you cover any small mistakes from earlier strokes.

Add a tiny drop of water to the pot, stir gently with the back of a brush, and try again. If a pot has dried out completely, message us and we'll send a replacement free of charge.

Use the fine brush, paint slowly, and wipe the brush on paper towel between strokes. If you go over an edge, wait for it to dry then paint over with the neighbouring number — the canvas hides any small overlap.

Yes — a clear acrylic varnish protects the painting and gives it a uniform gloss or matte finish. Some kits include a small varnish pot. If yours doesn't, any acrylic varnish from an art shop works.

Three things help: use the right brush size for the area, work with paint that's the right thickness (water it down slightly if it's pulling), and paint in long even strokes rather than short dabs.

Custom Kits

You upload a photo through our custom kit page. We turn it into a paint by numbers design — pre-printed canvas, numbered paints, brushes — and ship it to you. Most painters use a photo of a pet, a person, a wedding, or a place that means something.

High resolution, good lighting, and a clear subject. Phone photos are usually fine if they're sharp. Avoid heavy filters, dark or blurry images, and faces in deep shadow. Square or close-to-square photos crop best on the canvas.

Yes. We send you a preview of the design within 24 hours of your order. If it doesn't look right, tell us — we'll tweak it or refund you. Nothing ships until you're happy.

Custom kits are dispatched within 5 working days of us receiving your photo — this covers design, production, and packing. Delivery then takes 5–7 working days for UK, US, Australia, Canada, Europe, and New Zealand, or 10–14 working days elsewhere. We'll email you at every step with updates.

Yes — order each one separately so each has its own preview. If you're after bulk (5+ for a wedding, party, or corporate gift), get in touch and we'll sort it.

Tell us what to change and we'll redo it. If we can't get it right, we refund you in full. No painting is shipped until you've approved the design.

Shipping

We have two production hubs — a UK warehouse in York and a US partner workshop. Your order is routed to the closest one automatically, which is how we ship in days, not weeks.

Standard kits are dispatched within 3–5 working days. UK delivery typically takes 5–7 working days after dispatch. Custom kits take 5 working days to dispatch (design, production, and packing), then 5–7 working days for delivery — so allow around 10–12 working days end-to-end for custom orders.

We ship from our UK and US warehouses. Your order is routed to the closest hub, so most customers won't face any unexpected duty. International orders outside these regions may be subject to local import taxes — these vary by country and we can't predict them in advance.

Returns

Standard kits can be returned within 30 days of delivery if they're unopened and in original packaging. Email us first and we'll talk you through it.

Custom kits are made to your photo, so we can't accept returns once they've shipped. That's why we send a preview first — nothing ships until you've approved the design.

Once a kit's been opened and painted on, we can't accept it back. If something's wrong with the kit itself though — missing paints, damaged canvas — let us know and we'll fix it free.

Photo the damage and email us within 7 days of delivery. We'll send a free replacement of the affected part — or the whole kit if needed — at our cost.

Yes, free, every time. Reply to your order email or message us with the colour number and we'll send a replacement pot. No charge, no quibble.

Yes. Standard kits can be returned within 30 days for a refund. Quality issues are replaced free. Run out of paint? We send more, free. We'd rather you walk away happy than save a few quid.

Frames

Most kits ship without a frame so they fit standard sizes you can buy anywhere. We do offer pre-framed options on some kit sizes — pick the framed variant on the product page.

The same size as your canvas. Our standard sizes are 30×40cm, 40×50cm, and 50×60cm. Most local framers and online frame shops carry these as standard.

Any local art shop, IKEA, or online frame retailers (search for your canvas size — 30×40, 40×50, or 50×60cm). If you've bought a custom kit and want a matching frame, message us — we can ship one separately.

Once the paint is fully dry — 24 to 48 hours after your last brushstroke — you can carefully roll the canvas with the painted side facing out. Don't fold it. Mounting on a stretcher or framing is the better long-term option.

Either mount it on a wooden stretcher (which pulls the canvas tight) or use canvas-mounting tape and a small picture hanger. Stretching gives the cleanest finish.
